Green Group Climate Adaptation Accelerator
Food Innovation Program for Startups
Application Closed

Context:
- Arid and semi-arid regions, particularly in desert areas, are highly disadvantaged by the limited water supply, mainly due to high temperatures, significant evaporation, low precipitation, and scarce water resources, which affect the water supply for domestic, commercial, and agricultural purposes.
- According to the World Bank, agriculture uses 65% of the world’s fresh water, with around 45% of it being wasted. In addition to that, more than one-quarter of the global energy is spent on food production.
- With the gradual expansion of drylands caused by the effects of climate change, many countries are starting to face frequent droughts and water scarcity. As such, using water & energy more efficiently is clearly part of the answer to climate adaptation.
- The development of innovative sustainability-led solutions can have a massive impact on the Water-Food-Energy nexus, in both developing and developed countries, by bringing to the table new and more efficient agriculture practices and processes.
Challenge:
How might we design innovative and sustainable agri-food solutions that can help optimize water or energy usage while minimizing environmental impact?
Our goal is to level-up 6 to 7 innovative startup solutions that address the unique challenges of the agri-food sector while promoting environmental sustainability and economic viability.
Objectives:
- Equip 6 to 7 early-stage startups with the needed skills, knowledge, contacts and tools to level up their innovative solutions that will help optimize water and/or energy usage while minimizing environmental impact.
- Tackle the most pressing challenges faced by arid regions, through the development and growth of accessible and efficient innovative solutions.
- Develop a robust network with participants, mentors, and industry partners to accelerate the development and implementation of sustainability-led solutions.
- Position the Green Group as a strong contributor to the development of innovative and sustainability-led initiatives and strengthen the relationship between the 6 countries.
